September 10th: Characters in Clay

Today we showed images of various pop culture characters that the students recognize and discussed how heroes and villains are represented differently and the ways in which these characters reflect real and imagined sources. We also looked at contemporary artists who work with a set of “characters” such as Laylah Ali and Woody Othello (a mentor for the program) and their process of working.

Students wrote about physical and behavioral characteristics that their “character” would have, and drew out ideas for their sculptures.
